Nutrient dense vs Calorie dense - What's healthier?
Share
The subject of nutrition and food can be a challenging one to tackle, specially for beginner trainees as well as for people who may struggle to fuel their health or performance adequately for lack of understanding. If these labels hit home in any sense, do read on.
When it comes to density, for the purposes of this post I am referring to a measure of accumulation of a particular item(s), in this case, either nutrients or calories. The denser our food, the richer. However, not all wealth is health. It is for that reason that, when it comes to food and specifically nutrition, the focus must rest on the quality and density of the components of the food we eat rather than the amount of energy (calories) that it will provide our organism. That is, if the purpose of consumption is health. This is because 'empty', processed or non-nutrient dense meals and foods, will provide you with the energetical basis to carry out your daily activities and performance, but will not fully replenish the building blocks that sustain and nourish the very same organismic activities and growth.
So, if your aim is to improve and maintain your health and fitness, I would strongly recommend you focus on rich and nutrient dense nourishing foods. This can take the form of legume and whole-foods based meals. Alternatively, you can always order a pricey pizza and get double the calories with a quarter of the nutritional value. The information is now yours, as is the choice ;)
